Chapter Twelve

When I got home, Lynn was in the backyard, sitting in a lawn chair, a sketch pad in her lap, and pastel crayons spread all around her. She was sketching the sky as the sun set. It was suffused with red and orange light; the wispy clouds tinted a light lavender. I had been so engrossed in thought over what was going on at High Life Derm that I hadn’t even noticed one of the all-time best sunsets of the summer.

I let Bruno run around the yard sniffing and snapping at fireflies as I flopped into another chair and filled Lynn in on what had happened at High Life. At least what I knew about it.

“How well did you know Renata? Was there something going on between her and the guy they arrested?” Lynn stopped blending in a darker lavender shadow on one cloud to look at me.

“I have been out of the loop since Artie and I divorced, but I believe there could have been. I always thought she had a thing for Artie, but there were rumors about her and Malcolm, and at the funeral, she was hanging all over him.”

“Maybe they had a lover’s quarrel. Are either of them married?”

“Both divorced. From a few things I overheard Artie say, Renata was involved with someone, though I never heard who it was.”

Lynn said, “So likely the mystery man was Malcolm, though it could have been some other guy who found out about Malcolm.”

I laughed, “You’re really getting into this mystery solving. Maybe you should think about a new career.”

Lynn smiled. “Yeah, you’re right.”

Bruno ran up to plant his paws on my knees and drop an old tennis ball he’d found into my lap. I tossed it across the yard for him.

“Hey, that reminds me, how did it go with that new vet today?” Lynn said as she gathered up her pad and pastels.

“It was okay.” I hesitated, thinking about what Justin McKenzie had said. “He thinks a lot of Bruno’s problems could be a response to my stress over Artie’s murder and the break-in here at the house. He’s a nice guy, and it turns out he’s the grandson of one of my patients. I’m supposed to see him again the beginning of the week.”

“Oh?”

“No, I mean Bruno and I have an appointment on Tuesday.” I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of anticipation. I tried not to let that show on my face, however.

“Oh.” Lynn put her things down on the kitchen table once we were back inside. “I’ve been thinking. You were right about me needing a new career, or at least a job. I’m not going back to Arizona just yet, and I decided to let Doug go ahead and sell the house.”

I started to protest, to ask her if that was what she wanted, but she waved me quiet before I could get the words out.

“I told him to send me anything I needed to sign. I need to just get on with my life, make a new start.
